Graduate Student Employment

The Bloch School has graduate student employee (GSE) positions available most academic years.

Graduate student employees work for a faculty or staff member for a certain number of hours each week. GSE positions are paid at a rate of $20 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. These positions are highly competitive, and applications are reviewed year-round.

Note: Applying for a Bloch School scholarship is NOT the same as applying for a GSE position. You must apply separately for each using different forms.

How to Apply

The following materials are required to complete a GSE application. Only applicants who have submitted all required materials by the application deadline will be considered for placement in a GSE role.

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Email a current resume to April Graham at grahamap@umkc.edu.
  3. Email your video introduction to April Graham at grahamap@umkc.edu. See instructions below regarding the video introduction submission criteria.

Note: Applicants who are unable to submit a video due to technology limitations or other circumstances may request an interview by phone or in person.

Application Deadlines

  • Apply by June 1 for Fall GSE positions.
  • Apply by Oct. 1 for Spring GSE positions.
  • Applications are not accepted for the Summer term.

To be considered for a graduate student employee position, all application materials, including resume and reference letters are required by the application deadline.

You will be required to reapply each semester (fall and spring semesters only). However, once you’ve submitted a complete application packet, you will only need to resubmit a reappointment renewal request form each semester you reapply.

Video Introduction Criteria

Use Zoom or the recording tool of your choice to record your video statement.

The file must be in the .mp4 file format or provide a link for viewing the recording online.

Video length should be 5-7 minutes long.

Present yourself professionally but let your personality shine through.

First, be concise and focus on the key points outlined in the following questions:

  1. Tell us about your academic and professional background.
  2. Why did you choose UMKC?
  3. What motivates you to pursue a graduate student employee position?
  4. Describe specific skills that you bring to a GSE role that are relevant to the types of support GSEs provide. You are welcome to share multiple examples of your skills.
  5. What types of work do you most enjoy doing?

Then, choose 2 of the following additional topics and provide a response for each:

  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Provide an example of how you have effectively collaborated with others in a team setting. What role do you tend to play in team settings?
  • Leadership and Initiative: Can you share an example of a time when you took initiative or demonstrated leadership? What was the outcome?
  • Problem-solving & Critical Thinking: Tell us about a time when you faced a significant challenge. How did you approach it? What was the result?
  • Career Goals & Aspirations: Where do you see yourself in three years? How will this position help you achieve your career aspirations?

Finally, conclude with a closing statement sharing anything else that you would like us to know about you that you believe makes you a strong candidate for a GSE role.

Important Information About Graduate Student Employee Positions

Applicants will be evaluated based on merit and suitability for available Bloch GSE positions. GSE responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) front desk support, classroom technology support, recording studio support, finance lab tutoring, special event support, and assorted clerical tasks.

Bloch Graduate Student Employees (GSEs) are normally restricted to no more than 20 hours per week.
