Business Minor

The Business Minor at a glance: 18 credit hours of ranked and accredited business education courses covering topics in accounting, marketing and management.

MATH 110: Precalculus Algebra or MATH 120 or higher-level math. Satisfied with an ALEKS score of 61% or higher or an ACT math section score of 28 or higher or an SAT math section score of 660 or higher.

300/400-level Bloch elective (prerequisites as noted)* 3

#BIT degree-seeking students may substitute COMP-SCI 101, COMP-SCI 371 or COMP-SCI 470 for MIS 202.
*For students selecting an entrepreneurship elective, ENT 315 is preferred.

How Do I Get Started?
  1. Talk with an advisor to officially declare the minor.
  2. Take MIS 202: Computer Applications in Management (MATH 110 is a prerequisite for this course). BIT degree-seeking students can satisfy this requirement with COMP-SCI 101, COMP-SCI 371 or COMP-SCI 470.
  3. Take ACTG 210/210L: Introduction to Financial Accounting (30 credit hours, MATH 110 are prerequisites).

Notes

  • Students are required to be in good standing in a UMKC degree program. Students classified as ‘pre-’ can enter the minor but it cannot be added to the student’s program of study until a major has been declared.
  • Transfer students with equivalent course work will be allowed to apply up to 6 hours of credit and a minimum of 12 hours must be completed at UMKC.
  • BLA students are eligible for this minor.
  • Bloch School students are not eligible for this minor.
  • Students minoring in business are limited to 30 hours of Bloch School courses.
  • Students much achieve a minimum GPA of 2.25 in all Bloch School courses.
  • All 18 hours must be completed at the Bloch School.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship Minor

The Entrepreneurship Minor helps UMKC students acquire and refine their entrepreneurial skills. The minor is for all UMKC students who want to bring an entrepreneurial perspective to their major field of study. Entrepreneurship minors are required to complete a total of 18 credit hours, including four required entrepreneurship courses and two elective entrepreneurship courses. UMKC students from outside the Bloch School have the option of replacing up to two entrepreneurship electives with discipline-related electives that are consistent with their entrepreneurship focus.

  • ENT 315, Entrepreneurial Mindset and Opportunity Recognition
  • ENT 327, Developing the Business Model (ENT 315)
  • ENT 412, Entrepreneurial Finance (ACCTNG 210 or ENT 301, and ENT 327)

Select any two from the following (6 hours):

  • ENT 321, Real Estate Principles
  • ENT 326, Creativity, Innovation and Problem Solving
  • ENT 329, Entrepreneurship Scholars (admission to E-Scholars Program)
  • ENT 341, Technology Entrepreneurship

  • ENT 425, Corporate Entrepreneurship

How Do I Get Started?
  1. Take ENT 301 and ENT 315.
  2. Talk with an advisor to officially declare the minor.

Notes

  • Students should meet with an advisor after completing ENT 301 and ENT 315 to plan for the completion of the remaining minor courses.
  • Minor is open to Bloch School students in accounting and non-Bloch School students.
  • Non-Bloch School students minoring in entrepreneurship are limited to 30 hours of Bloch School courses.
  • Students must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.25 in all entrepreneurship courses.
  • All 18 hours must be completed in the Bloch School.
  • Students have the option of replacing two entrepreneurship electives with two discipline-related electives that are consistent with their entrepreneurial focus. These electives must be selected from an appropriate list of courses offered by the school that houses their major discipline and approved by the entrepreneurship department chair. Please talk with a Bloch School advisor about this process.
