What does a normal day at UMKC look like for you?

I usually start my day off by getting a coffee on the way to the office for my Bloch Ambassador hours. During my office hours, I work with the other Bloch Ambassadors on various events, respond to student emails, and help with anything needed around the office. After that, I attend my classes. My typical afternoon after my classes includes different meetings for the various student organizations I’m involved with and study time in the library.

What do you wish you had known before entering college?

I wish I had known more about the different scholarships offered to incoming freshman other than the automatic scholarships. There are so many competitive scholarships offered through not just UMKC, but local scholarships as well. It’s basically free money waiting for you, and it seems like fewer people apply every year!

How do you find balance between school and your personal life?

Since I live at home, I try to do my school activities like homework and studying on campus. I’ve found that if I do these things in a place like the library, I get a lot more done than If I were to do it on my couch. I have to isolate myself from others when I do my work, or else I will inevitably start a conversation. I save at least one day during the weekend purely to relax, have a good time with my friends, and explore KC.

Aside from UMKC, what part of Kansas City would you consider your home away from home?

Aside from UMKC, I’d consider just about any coffee shop downtown my home (my literal home being the only exception). The combination of the relaxing atmosphere and delicious espresso makes for the perfect environment. Kansas City has so many local coffee shops waiting to be discovered, you just have to find them! Especially with friends, these places are my absolute favorite.

What does a normal day at UMKC look like for you?

I start my day at the Bloch School Undergraduate Recruitment office. My main task at the office is to locate high schools around the area that have an English Learning Learner program. Additionally, I help with any task needed to be complete at the office. I then assist my courses and work on any homework. If I have availability, I attempt to assist student organizations like ALFHA and Enactus.

What do you wish you had known before entering college?

I wished I looked at the different courses available and what courses I needed to take to transfer. But most important I wish I looked at the scholarships available and ways to get involved on campus.

How do you find balance between school and your personal life?

A way I find to balance my life is to take at least an hour of each day to speak with my amazing family and reduce my stress. I also use my weekend nights to hang out with family and friends and my weekend mornings to work on schoolwork.

Aside from UMKC, what part of Kansas City would you consider your home away from home?

I would consider Power and Light District and the Kansas City Airport my home away home. Power and Light District because they always have something fun going on. The Kansas City Airport because it is the location that I like to be at when I am ready to visit my hometown, Cuamio Michoacán.

What does a normal day at UMKC look like for you?

A normal day at UMKC consists of bouncing from class to class, with my ambassador office hours sprinkled in-between. A few of my classes are composed of group projects, so I spend a decent amount of time meeting with them to work on our projects and complete assignments.

What do you wish you had known before entering college?

I wish I had paid more attention to my high school GPA and my ACT score. These are key components in getting scholarships and financial aid to help pay for college. I wish I learned more about the cost associated with attending college, as well as the other competitive scholarship opportunities. I would advise everyone to apply for any scholarships you are eligible for, as they can stack up quickly and cut the cost of college quite a bit.

How do you find balance between school and your personal life?

I like to use Sundays as a reset day to get caught up on any homework that I have due early next week. I also like to give myself a rough outline of the week and what I need to get accomplished, so I don’t fall behind on anything. I usually like to have Friday and Saturday to hang out with my friends and family, which is well needed after a busy week.

Aside from UMKC, what part of Kansas City would you consider your home away from home?

I really enjoy the River Market. I love going down there on the weekends in the summer to see the market filled with different vendors ranging from antiques to local produce. I am also a big fan of the sprint center, as I have seen many of my favorite artists perform there.

What does a normal day at UMKC look like for you?

I work in the Bloch Undergraduate Recruitment office in the mornings. My tasks at this job consist of scheduling Bloch Ambassadors for various events, analyzing budget information, and supporting the Ambassador team in various ways. I then have class in the middle of the day. After my classes, I head off to my internship, located two minutes from campus on the Country Club Plaza, and work there until the evening. My evenings are filled with meetings and events for the various student organizations I am involved with.

What do you wish you had known before entering college?

I wish I looked into scholarships more seriously before I entered college. It’s free money! There are so many opportunities for first-time college students to get their first year of school almost, if not completely, paid for!

How do you find balance between school and your personal life?

I find that taking at least one day per week to decompress and prepare for the coming week helps me. For me, this day is Saturday. I usually use this time to fill out my planner, hang out with friends and family, and finish tasks that aren’t related to school or work. I also use this time to explore the locations and events Kansas City has to offer!

Aside from UMKC, what part of Kansas City would you consider your home away from home?

I would say the Power and Light District. There’s always something going on over there, whether it be Hot Country Nights or an event at the Sprint Center. There’s also so many good restaurants to experience in that district.

What does a normal day at UMKC look like for you?

In the mornings I work at the Bloch Undergraduate Recruitment office before heading to class. I have multiple classes throughout the day with short breaks in between. I try to utilize my breaks to grab lunch with friends, meet people on campus, and catch up or get ahead in studying. On days that I don’t have class, I work at a local bank.

What do you wish you had known before entering college?

Before entering college, I wish I would have known how much plans can change. I always thought I had my life planned out, but once I got to college it seemed like everything was always changing. This isn’t a bad thing, but I definitely think it’s important to go into college with an open mind, knowing things could change.

How do you find balance between school and your personal life?

For the most part, I try to do most of my schoolwork while I am on campus. Taking advantage of breaks during the day and getting ahead whenever possible helps maximize the amount of time I can spend doing stuff away from school when I get the chance. Another way I like to balance the two is by intermingling them and studying with friends.

Aside from UMKC, what part of Kansas City would you consider your home away from home?

One of the reasons I chose to come to UMKC was because I love Kansas City! Crown Center is a place I have spent a lot of time as my family would go ice skating and shopping every Christmas. It is a place with a lot of memories and a place I still enjoy going to.
