Nonprofit Governance Series:
Tapping the Power of Your Board in These Tough Times

This interactive series of three sessions, facilitated by noted governance expert (and MCNL director) Dave Renz, will focus on how nonprofit boards and executives are navigating their way to results and impact as they pursue the “next normal” of agency operations.  We invite agency executives, board leaders, and board members to join us for one, two, or all three of these sessions to explore how effective agency boards and executives support each other to achieve the best of the board-executive partnership.

Session 1: How Effective Boards Support Their Executives was held on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 (visit the Archive below to view and/or download the materials from the session).

Session 2: How Effective Nonprofit Executives Support Their Boards
Tuesday, July 14, 2020, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

In what ways do successful nonprofit executives most effectively support their governing boards and board members as they strive to navigate these challenging and confusing times?  What do members of boards need and want from their executives, and how are savvy executives providing essential leadership, encouragement, and support to enable their boards and board members to be successful?  In this second session of the July Nonprofit Navigation Series, center director Dave Renz will discuss the distinct ways that nonprofit chief executives can enhance the experience and performance of their boards and their members, and session participants will be invited to share their insights and experiences to learn more about what can contribute to the resilience and value of a true board-executive partnership.

Session 3: Keeping Them in the Game: How Successful Boards Effectively Engage Their Members
Tuesday, July 21, 2020, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

One of the most significant challenges and imperatives confronting nonprofits and their governing board leaders in today’s demanding and turbulent world is that of engagement – of keeping their members motivated and actively engaged in the work of the board.  No matter how talented and bright the members you’ve recruited to the board, nothing much happens (and lots can go wrong) if those members are not productively engaged in the board’s work.  So how do we keep them in the game? In this third session of the July Nonprofit Navigation Series, center director Dave Renz will share insights from both research and the field about how successful boards and their leaders motivate, engage, and get the most from the members of their boards, and session participants will be invited to share their insights and experiences to highlight what are some of the most effective ways to “keep them in the game!”
