Master of Science in Finance (M.S.F.) Degree Requirements

Starting with students entering fall 2018, the M.S.F. degree will require a minimum of 30 credit hours. Students, without prior preparation in accounting, economics, finance or statistics may need to take prerequisite courses which can be up to 9 additional credit hours.

M.S.F. students must be advised before enrolling in their first semester of coursework. Subsequent advising is not required, but recommended.

All students must submit a program of study form once they have completed 50 percent of their program hours. An application for graduation should be submitted when enrolling in final semester classes, but can be turned in as late as early in the student’s final semester. See the academic calendar for specific deadlines. Forms are available in the Bloch School Services Office, room 115 Bloch Heritage Hall. The minimum GPA for retention and graduation is 3.0 (B).

Program Prerequisites
Prerequisite courses include Financial Accounting for Decision Making, Business Analytics and Statistics, and Financial Management.

Prerequisite courses can be waived based on completion of comparable courses at the undergraduate or graduate level with a grade of “C” or better. Any prerequisite courses needed are in addition to the 33 hours required in the M.S.F. program.

Core Courses (21 hours)
The M.S.F. degree program requires a minimum of 30 hours completed at the graduate level. Courses include areas such as investments, derivative securities, financial modeling, fixed income analysis and mergers and acquisitions.

Designated Electives (9 hours)

Transfer Credit
A maximum of six (6) credit hours of graduate coursework completed with distinction at an accredited graduate school and relevant to the individual’s degree program may be accepted toward the M.S.F. A petition requesting consideration is necessary to begin this process. Official transcripts including this course work must be on file with UMKC. Students should be prepared to supply a course syllabus and other information about the course(s). Credits cannot be accepted if they will be more than seven years old at the time of graduation. Transfer credit should be reviewed and decided within the first semester in the degree program.

Retention and Graduation Requirements
Students must maintain a 3.0 (“B”) average to be in good standing. Of the total M.S.A. hours required, at least 80 percent of all courses must be completed with grades of “B” (3.0) or higher. Up to 20 percent can be completed with grades of “B-,” “C+” or “C.” No grade below “C” in a 5500-level class will count toward the degree.
