James Scott is a registered architect and a nationally certified planner. He has frequently served as a consultant to public and private clients, providing expertise in the design of urban environments, public participation, land use planning, site design, master planning, programming and project management, policy development, urban design, and architecture. Jim founded the Applied Urban Research Institute, a nonprofit planning and urban development organization, and served as president. His firm, Scott Associates, focuses on urban design, architectural design, and redevelopment projects and plans with a multidisciplinary approach. Specifically, Scott Associates focuses on comprehensive community development with nonprofit organizations.
Along with his professional practice, Jim also teaches and participates in research efforts as an adjunct professor and guest lecturer in public administration at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri â€“ Kansas City and Park University. He was awarded a 2013-2014 Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship in Istanbul, Turkey. Other recent awards include the 2016 Missouri Preservation Award, a 2016 KCMO Capstone Award for Community Impact, the 2016 KCMO Cornerstone Award, and the 2017 Historic Kansas City Preservation Award.
