Application Components
The following items are needed for a complete study abroad application:
- Application
- Personal statement
The personal statement should address your interest in studying abroad and how you will benefit from the experience. It should be typewritten and about one page in length. - Letter of recommendation (must accompany application and not be sent separately)
- Deposit of $650 per trip
Can be paid by check (payable to UMKC) or credit card. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. No cash, please.
Note: Incomplete applications cannot be accepted.
Deadline
The priority application deadline is December 3, 2012. However, applications will be accepted through February 1, 2013, on a space available basis. These trips do have history of filling and interested students are encouraged to apply early.
Application Review & Notification
Applications are reviewed as they are received. A committee of faculty members involved in the study abroad program reviews each application. Students applying by the December 3 priority application deadline will have a decision by the end of the fall 2012 semester. Students applying after December 3 will be notified as soon as possible after review of their materials. Notification of application status will be sent to the student’s UMKC email account.
Class/Trip Capacities
A capacity of 24 is set for each trip. Generally this is the largest number of guests that can be accommodated by many of our business visits. Each trip leader has the authority to change the capacity as needed.
Who Can Participate?
Preference for spots is given to degree-seeking Bloch School students and those pursuing the Business Minor. However students from other academic units at UMKC are welcome to apply. To be eligible, you must have completed one semester at UMKC prior to the start of the trip in May. Undergraduate applicants must have a 2.75 UM GPA. A transfer GPA will be reviewed for students who entered UMKC in fall 2012. Graduate students must be in good standing.
Students from other universities may apply as well. Beyond the application, these students will need to apply for admission to a UMKC degree program or for entry as a non-degree-seeking student. Certain restrictions apply to non-degree-seeking enrollment. Please take a moment to review our visiting student requirements.
The university may have additional requirements for participation in study abroad programs that must be met. See the Center for International Academic Programs website for more information.
What Does the Deposit Cover?
The deposit will be credited toward the cost of accommodations as these arrangements must be made (and paid for) well in advance of departure. Note, the cost of accommodations may change and your deposit may not cover the final cost. The final cost may be higher than the original deposit amount due demand and/or currency fluctuations. You may be asked to pay additional monies to cover the cost of in-country transportation, entrance fees, business visit fees, etc. Additional payments may be sought before and/or after the trip.
