Degree Requirements
The M.S.A. program at UMKC ranges from 30 to 60 credit hours. The total number of hours required depends on your undergraduate coursework; however, students without an undergraduate degree in accounting can still be fully admitted to the program.
Accounting Undergraduates
Stage I Courses-30 Credit Hours
You must have completed college algebra and possess skills equivalent to MIS 202: Computer Applications in Management before taking more advanced quantitative coursework in the program. Course requirements in Stage I may be waived after admission by an academic advisor. Completion of the program also qualifies you for the various examinations leading to professional certification. Classes are three hours unless otherwise noted.

Stage II-a Minimum of 30 Credit Hours
Students with an undergraduate degree in accounting may complete the M.S.A. program in a minimum of 30 semester hours, and choose a focus area such as Accounting/Audit or Taxation. Examples of focus areas which students may select follow. Some students, based on their undergraduate accounting background, may be required to take some or all of the following accounting courses in addition to focus area coursework:
- ACTG 409: Advanced Taxation (3 hours) -or- ACTG 5557 Introduction to Taxation (3 hours)
- ACTG 421: Governmental/Not-for-Profit Accounting (3 hours)
- ACTG 5559: Advanced Financial Accounting (3 hours)
Accounting/Audit Focus (30 credit hours)
- ACTG 5570 level Managerial Accounting (3 hours)
- ACTG 5570 level Tax (3 hours)
- ACTG 5570 level Auditing (3 hours)
- ACTG 5570 level Financial Accounting (3 hours)
- Approved electives in Auditing or Financial Accounting (6 hours)

Taxation Focus (30 credit hours)

Non-accounting Undergraduates
This program is designed for students with little or no undergraduate accounting coursework. It provides comprehensive coverage of accounting topics necessary for a professional career in the field. Completion of the program also qualifies students for the various examinations leading to professional certification. Classes are three credit hours unless otherwise noted.

Transfer Credit
A maximum of six (6) credit hours of graduate coursework completed with distinction at an accredited graduate school and relevant to the individual’s degree program may be accepted toward the M.S.A. You must provide official transcripts to UMKC for this purpose. All transfer credit is approved by your advisor during your first semester.
