Guest Relations Manager: Ronald McDonald House

Description: To develop, implement and evaluate guest enrichment activities for RMHC's Houses, oversee the daily operations and activities of the Cherry Street House during the day, and help ensure and facilitate the smooth and caring delivery of services to guest families.

Responsibilities

· Develop, coordinate, evaluate, and oversee the implementation of RMHC guest enrichment programming.
· Ensure the offering of weekly guest enrichment activities, at both RMHC Houses.
· Provide outreach to the community, educating others about the mission and services of RMHC.
· Identify and coordinate in-kind donations for Houses, ensuring that donations are being used in a timely manner.
· Identify potential partners to develop collaborative services for guest families.
· Develop Guest Satisfaction Survey tool. Disseminate, collect, and evaluate survey results on an ongoing basis.
· Develop and implement other evaluation tools as needed to assess the effectiveness of guest enrichment and other forms of programming.
· Identify, coordinate, and collect guest family experiences and stories to further our mission during development and outreach activities.
· Collaborate with the Volunteer Program Manager to coordinate and manage House volunteer group activities (i.e. meal, work groups).
· Coordinate with the Volunteer Program Manager and House Manager to ensure proper orientation and training of House volunteers.
· Maintain House volunteer schedules, confirm coverage, and locate substitutes when necessary.
· Routinely assess, alongside the Volunteer Program Manager and the House Manager, volunteer RMHC needs and opportunities.
· Support RMHC Volunteers in all aspects of volunteer relations, reporting concerns to the Volunteer Program Manager in a timely fashion.
· Function as on-site manager of the Cherry Street House. This includes but not limited:
· Check in/out, orient and explain House policies and services to guest families, following and documenting proper office procedures for documentation.
· Identify special family situations and discuss with the Programs & Operations Director as necessary. Take disciplinary and/or other action as appropriate.
· Accurately and completely, maintain guest records, through utilization of the RMHC Guest Services database, hard copy files, and room revenue logs.
· Monitor and ensure RMHC House cleanliness and orderliness of all areas. This includes performing light house cleaning and organizing duties on a daily basis, as needed.
· Monitor activities and maintain control of facility usage by guest families, volunteers, and all others in the House.
· Monitor physical structure and other needs of Cherry Street (i.e. supplies, maintenance, linens) and communicate these needs to the House Manager. Assist with resolution as needed.
· Conduct House tours for families and outside groups, as needed.
· Effectively communicate RMHC needs and mission to the community.
· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 · Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, business administration, non-profit management, or related field.
· 3-4 years experience managing volunteers and developing programs.
· Demonstrate good judgment, good decision-making ability, creativity and dependability.
· Proven leadership, time management and organizational skills.
· Ability to work in a team environment.
· Ability to calmly manage crisis situations.
· Excellent community relations skills required.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong desire to work with people.
· Advanced competency in a variety of computer applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as an ability to quickly learn and operate agency databases applications and spreadsheets.
· Experience working closely with families or children in times of stress is preferred.
· Passion for the mission of RMHC.

Mid-America Regional Council Green Impact Zone Field Based position

Description
The Mid-America Regional Council, the bi-state Kansas City area's metropolitan planning organization and voluntary association of local governments, is seeking four qualified individuals to conduct outreach to residents within the Green Impact Zone to help connect them with programs and services.

Responsibilities
These newly created positions will assist the Green Impact Zone Director and other staff to gain an in-depth understanding of programs and services available from city and public and private institutions; develop relationships with neighborhood leaders, and interacting with residents to help them secure resources to meet their needs.

Qualifications
Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years progressive experience in community development or community organizing. An undergraduate degree in business administration, communications, public administration or related field may be substituted for up to 2 years of experience. Candidate must have strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, ability to build relationships and gain trust from a wide variety of stakeholders, excellent time management skills and the ability to manage many projects simultaneously. Candidate must have a strong customer service orientation. The ideal candidate will have the ability to deal with diverse personalities, a thoroughness and attention to detail, and a passion for serving disadvantaged populations.

Bridging The Gap: Fall 2009 Internships

Walking School Bus Internship
This internship supports Bridging The Gap’s regional Walking School Bus program, a federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funded program to improve children’s health and quality of life by involving parent volunteers in making conditions safer for many more children to walk to school.

Basic Internship Description: Education and encouragement work in communities that have SRTS grants. The work is to get more children walking to school more often.

Major Responsibilities: Assisting program coordinator in carrying out day-to-day activities of Safe Routes to School work in communities that are implementing SRTS grants to build sidewalk infrastructure and get more children walking to school more often. Assisting with event planning, volunteer training, and data entry. Typical events might include school visits and tabling to recruit and educate parents, school staff, and community residents. Assistance in creating maps and lists of walking groups, implementing standard SRTS evaluations and surveys, and assisting in preparing grants.

Effect of Work on Program: The Safe Routes to School movement and federal program are expected to grow, and as more communities become aware of the benefits of more children walking (cleaner air, healthy activity, less traffic, safer neighborhoods), program support will become crucial to serving larger numbers of communities.

Skills/Experience Needed: Useful experience for students majoring in community planning, health fields, law enforcement, public administration, architecture and the built environment, non-profit management.

Hours Per Week: 8-12


 

Bridging The Gap Administrative Internship
This internship supports the office of the President/CEO of Bridging The Gap, who is responsible for community collaboration and fundraising to achieve BTG’s mission to make the region sustainable by connecting environment, economy and community.

Basic Internship Description: Providing administrative assistance for the President/CEO.

Major Responsibilities: Researching aspects of environmental sustainability and assisting in contacts and appointments.

Effect of Work on Program: Significant impact on the efficiency of BTG administration and the ability of the CEO to spend time working with a variety of organizations and calling on potential funders

Skills/Experience Needed: Personable. Good organization, computer, phone and writing skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and internet research. Cell phone preferred.

Hours Per Week: 30-40 (NOTE: If necessary, work could be split between two interns with 15-20 hours each.) Home work schedule may be accommodated.

Additional Information: Some meetings in the BTG office will be necessary to coordinate with CEO and other staffers.  

 


 

Clean Commute InternshipThis internship supports Bridging The Gap’s UMKC Clean Commute program, which challenges students, staff, and faculty to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips to and from campus by using alternative modes of transportation such as bicycles, walking and mass transit.

Basic Internship Description: Working with program manager to promote and encourage the use of alternative transportation on the UMKC campus.

Major Responsibilities:Develop and implement ongoing outreach/education plans Work with BTG Publications Coordinator to develop outreach materials (flyers, etc)Plan and implement events/activities that promote Student Commute Project and services (loaner bikes, bike station)Assist with the UMKC Clean Commute Advisory Group whose purpose is to promote alternative commuting options and provide volunteers for the bike stationKeeping track of all hours worked in Intern folder

Effect of Work on Program:Intern will have a strong impact in helping set a regional example of the positive health and air quality impacts of making alterative transportation choices on a college campus.

Skills/Experience Needed:Strong communication skills, both written and verbalAbility to problem solve and think on your feetCreative, enthusiasticStrong interest in promoting alternative transportation Knowledge of marketing and graphic design helpful, but not requiredInterest in alternative transportation a plus

Will require presence at either Bridging The Gap office or UMKC campus.

Hours Per Week: 5-8


 

Rain Barrel InternshipThis internship supports Bridging The Gap’s rain barrel program. Over five seasons BTG’s rain barrel program has taught hundreds of people in the Kansas City area through workshops, barrel sales and online instructions about how to improve the quality of their lawn and garden by capturing rain water from their roof.

Basic Internship Description: Internship will be a combination of office and field work. While in the office intern will assist program manager with various duties. Field work will be unsupervised and involve preparing for workshops. Intern will also have the opportunity to help teach one or more rain barrel workshops.

Major Responsibilities: Prepping barrels for sales and workshops (training provided). Obtaining a reliable source of barrels. Light office duty including tracking sales and inventory. Helping teach one or more rain barrel workshops.

Effect of Work on Program: Intern will contribute to the program by opening more opportunities to expand and strengthen sales, workshops, and general rain water catchment awareness.

Skills/Experience Needed: Ability to work outside. Ability to lift 20 lbs. at a time. Comfortable using power tools. Ability to work unsupervised. Basic computer skills. Basic communication skills. Cell phone helpful but not essential.

Hours Per Week: 5-10

City Planning & DevelopmentCitywide Planning Intern
The student will be trained to operate GIS software, analyzing land use and transportation information, creating power point programs, and writing reports of findings. The work program will involve assisting with computer mapping and will be an excellent experience for students interested in a career in computer aided drafting or college majors in geography, engineering, planning, architecture, or landscape architecture. Desired background: computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Windows operating system.

National Public Lands Day Saturday, Sept. 26, 9:00 AM to Noon, Blue Springs Lake Region in Jackson County’s Fleming Park

Join us as Bridging The Gap hosts a working celebration of one of the Kansas City region’s most scenic public areas! Clean up litter, remove invasive plants and provide tree care in one of our region's best-loved parks. This project is a joint effort of Heartland Tree Alliance, Kansas City WildLands and Keep Kansas City Beautiful, affiliates of Bridging The Gap. Registration deadline is September 16, 2009. Kansas City WildLands Annual Honeysuckle Battle

Kansas City WildLands Single-Site Workday (Groups Only)

Mutually Convenient Date between August 22, 2009 - March 15, 2010

Volunteers will remove honeysuckle, an invasive plant, from a public land site in the metro area, helping native plants flourish. These workdays can be arranged with our Kansas City WildLands Program Manager on a mutually convenient date. Now scheduling group workdays for August 22, 2009 through March 15, 2010. Kansas City Tree Site Identification Volunteers

Be part of the solution to climate change! The city of Kansas City, Missouri is undertaking a climate protection plan that includes the goal of planting 120,000 additional trees over the next 10 years. This first stage requires identification of available planting sites. Heartland Tree Alliance offers a wonderful opportunity to be part of this ambitious, important effort. Driving is not required to complete this project. This can be done on a volunteer’s own time or organized as a special group workday. Community Recycling Centers

The Community Recycling Centers need you to help reduce the amount of trash going to the landfill! Sign up to volunteer at one of our recycling centers, and you’ll help conserve resources, reduce waste and meet other citizens who care about the environment. The centers operate every week and are almost completely staffed by volunteers. Scheduling is flexible – whatever amount of time you have to give is appreciated! This is a great opportunity for individuals or groups. (Groups can be scheduled on Saturdays.) Current Kansas City locations: 91st and Hillcrest and Metro North Shopping Center.
